Family Room quote

So I'm looking for a quote to have Aunt Nettie make into vinyl letters to put up above our large family picture in the family room. Do you have any suggestions? Here are some of my first thoughts, but I want all of yours too.

Out of the dreariness,
Into its cheeriness,
Come we in weariness
Home.
--Stephen Chalmers
(I like the sentiment of this, but am not sure I want the words dreariness and weariness on the wall.)

* * * * *

Peace and rest at length have come,
All the day's long toil is past;
And each heart is whispering,
'Home, Home at last!'
--Thomas Hood
(I like the idea of home being peace and rest, but am not sure about having long toil on the wall.)

* * * * *

He is the happiest, be he king or peasant, who finds peace in his home.
--Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
(This is OK. The author's name is almost longer than his quote.)

* * * * *

What gift has Providence bestowed on man that is so dear to him as his children?
--Cicero
(I love this thought because it is absolutely true. It's also shorter and would maybe look better.)

* * * * *

Tis sweet to know there is an eye will mark our coming, and look brighter when we come.
--Lord Byron
(Same thought as the last one.)

* * * * *

So . . . please do some research and help me find some more possibilities . . . or is there one of these I've listed that jumps out as PERFECT?

Thanks a million.

Love, Mom

Marsha I hope you don't mind me leaving a comment on your blog. There is a quote that I like that I have at my house.
"Where we love is home-
home that our feet may leave
but not our hearts."

Whatever you choose sounds like it will be neat.

I like the Goethe one, and I think it would be okay to shorten it just to Goethe. I also like the Byron one. Here are a couple others I found:
"God send us a little home, to come back to, when we roam." or "God bless thee, when winds blow, our home, and all we know" (both from "A prayer for a little home" by Florence Bone).
I'll keep thinking, but I like the options you have already. Those are some great quotes!

I agree, great quotes. I like the Cicero and Byron ones. The one Kris shared is from Oliver Wendell Holmes. Here are some others I found and like:

Peace - that was the other name for home. ~Kathleen Norris
(short and sweet)

Home is a name, a word, it is a strong one; stronger than magician ever spoke, or spirit ever answered to, in the strongest conjuration. ~Charles Dickens (not sure you want words like magician and conjuration on the wall but I thought this one portrayed the powerful sentiments associated with home. And, it’s from Charles Dickens.)

There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort. ~Jane Austen
(I had to include this one with all the Jane Austen lovers in the family. Of course I really like the sentiment too and it is relatively short and would look nice on a wall)

Every house where love abides
And friendship is a guest,
Is surely home, and home sweet home
For there the heart can rest.
~Henry Van Dyke
(a little long perhaps, but a sweet sentiment)

One's home is like a delicious piece of pie you order in a restaurant on a country road one cozy evening - the best piece of pie you have ever eaten in your life - and can never find again. After you leave home, you may find yourself feeling homesick, even if you have a new home that has nicer wallpaper and a more efficient dishwasher than the home in which you grew up. ~Lemony Snicket
(Come on; don’t you think this would look great on the wall? Only there wouldn’t be room for the picture anymore. Okay, so I wasn’t serious about this one but I wanted to share it anyway)

Can't wait to find out what you pick!

My personal favorite is the Thomas Hood quote. It is probably because as I read it I remembered coming home for Christmas my freshman year of college. It had been a long semester and I was so excited to finally be going home for the holidays. I remember when dad turned on our street and I saw our house and the Christmas tree in the living room I started to cry, it was a wonderful feeling that I was FINALLY home.

I think that the toil doesn't have to be a bad thing more like just working, who doesn't look forward to going home at the end of the day? Anyway that is what I like best so far.

I also like the first one Mauri suggested, "God send us a little home, to come back to, when we roam." And the Henry Van Dyke one that Jill suggested.

I'll think of any others that might be good.

I recently read this quote in one of Pres. Monson's talks and really liked it.
"Despite all new inventions and modern designs, fads and fetishes, no one has yet invented, or will ever invent, a satisfying substitute for one’s own family." (Dr. Stuart E. Rosenberg, The Road to Confidence)

Well, I am sorry to just now be getting to this. (We've been in survival mode lately here). I like the Thomas Hood one. I agree with Heather about "long toil." I also like the one Kris suggested. I really like the one that Pres. Monson quoted--it is so true. You could also put up the line from the hymn,
"Oh what songs of the heart we shall sing all the day when again we assemble at home!"

wow am I behind on the times.
I'm with the rest in liking the Thomas Hood one, and the Goethe one.
I also like this one;

"Home, the spot of earth supremely blest, A dearer, sweeter spot than all the rest" ~ Robert Montgomery

or how about a little Neil?
"Home’s the most excellent place of all." ~ Neil Diamond (heh heh)

I may be chiming in altogether too late, but there you have it.

And, though it doesn't mean as much to me as I'm sure it does Mom and Jill and Melanie, I like the Cicero one as well.
